1960

Birth of GIS

The quantitative revolution of the 1960s in Geography motivated the expansion of computer programs for map analysis. Later, the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, led by Michael Goodchild, formalized research on key geographic information science topics such as spatial analysis and visualization.

1962

Father of the GIS

Roger Tomlinson, a 28-year-old geographer invented Canada Geographic Information System (CGIS) in 1962, which is one of the oldest GIS methods. CGIS is often considered the root of Geographic Information Systems due to its uniqueness because it is considered a layer approach system to map handling. Due to his contribution to this field and credit for coining the term GIS, he is known as the Father of GIS.

1965

The Harvard University

Howard Fisher in 1964 founded Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics. In 1965, the Synagraphic Mapping System (SYMAP), a novel widespread automated mapping program was designed. The laboratory also became a research center for spatial analysis and visualization.

1969

First GIS Software Founded

Jack and Laura Dangermond founded the Environmental System Research Institute in Redlands, California, United States in 1969. ESRI is renowned for its huge contribution in the field of GIS. The consulting firm applied computer mapping and spatial analysis to help land use planners and land resource managers make informed decisions.

1990

Adoption of GIS

Between 1990 and 2010, GIS became mainstream due to IT advancements like cheaper, faster computers and available mapping data. The integration of remote sensing tech with GIS, along with new earth observation satellites, fueled widespread adoption in classrooms, businesses, and governments globally. Due to the increased adoption of GIS over the previous twenty years, open-source GIS was born. GIS data has become more and more ubiquitous.

2000

GIS in India

Survey of India began incorporating GIS technology in its operations during the early 2000s. This transition marked a significant advancement in their mapping and surveying capabilities, allowing for more efficient data management, analysis, and visualization of geographical information.

2014

Present Scenario of GIS in Rajasthan

Rajasthan adopted the GIS in 2014 in DOIT&C. The primary objective of Rajdharaa is to acquire, process, store, distribute and improve the utilization of geospatial data, which is the gateway of spatial and non-spatial data being generated by various Line Departments of Government of Rajasthan.
